Coaching vs. Counseling

Coaching and counseling can both provide valuable support, but they serve different purposes. Understanding the difference can help you choose the next step that best fits your needs.

Support should fit the season you’re in.

You may know that you want support but feel unsure whether coaching or counseling is the right place to begin. Coaching is generally focused on identifying goals, building practical skills, and moving forward. Counseling is a clinical service that can address mental health conditions, trauma, and significant emotional distress.

Neither is better than the other. They simply meet different needs.

A PARTNERSHIP FOR GROWTH

What is Coaching?

  • Coaching does not involve diagnosing and treatment of mental health disorders.

  • Coaching is a collaborative process where a coach partners with an individual, family, or group to help them unlock their potential, maximize performance, and achieve personal or professional goals through thought-provoking dialogue, support, and challenge.

  • Key aspects of coaching include goal orientation, skill development, empowerment, and partnership. Coaching is more focused on the here and now and planning for the future rather than focusing extensively on the past.

  • Coaching is generally less emotionally challenging or painful, as individuals seeking coaching usually are not experiencing major dysfunction or seeking help because they are in great emotional pain.

  • Coaching assumes the client is fundamentally healthy and capable of making positive changes more quickly.

  • Coaching provides more flexibility in service delivery, such as the coach being able to communicate through social media and texting and provide more off-site and out-of-state services.

SUPPORT FOR EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

What is Counseling?

  • Counseling involves diagnosing and treating mental health disorders.

  • Counseling involves helping individuals cope with emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges.

  • Progress may be slower and painful and generally involves more in-depth assessment and exploration of one’s past, aside from brief therapy models.

  • Counseling may involve dealing more with an individual’s past, healing emotional wounds, addressing trauma, and resolving deeper issues.

  • Counseling requires the use of a mental health license, is strictly regulated, and limits the client-counselor relationship and communication.

Coaching is not counseling or mental health treatment.

A Higher Calling Coaching & Consulting does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Coaching is not a replacement for counseling, therapy, medical care, or emergency mental health services.
